The establishment of the Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts provides leadership in the presentation and development of contemporary arts. Through exhibitions, performances, educational programs, and community partnerships, the SCICA has begun to engage the public by sharing in the experience, interpretation and understanding of the work of established and emerging artists. The SCICA enables artists and audiences alike to push the limits of artistic expression and explore provocative new ideas illuminating life here and now.
"In May of 2004 Richard Shaffer brought the SCICA a retrospective installation entitled ZEBRAPARIS. The installation covered 30 years of his life as a painter, an artist, a father, a new father, a husband, a surfer, the birth of a daughter stricken with cancer, her survival as well as his. ZEBRAPARIS brought to Santa Cruz the kind of inward examination that only our greatest artists allow us to see. ZEBRAPARIS' sensory depths will live with us always." Kirby Scudder - SCICA Director
