SANTA CRUZ INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS
"Night-Light" 2007
A Community Art Installation for Peace
In conjunction with the United Nations International Peace week, on Thursday, September 20th, 2007 at 9pm, the Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts along with thousands of people from this community will light up over two miles of Santa Cruz coastline for the second annual "Night-Light," a community art installation for peace. Thousands of lights will shine between 9 and 10pm on that night from Lighthouse (Santa Cruz Lighthouse Point on West Cliff) to Lighthouse (Walton Lighthouse at the Santa Cruz Harbor). Along with five hundred 15-million candle power spotlights, ten 2000-watt searchlights "Night-Light" will incorporate a light shining from each member of our community. This year's "Night-Light" will include participation by the Municipal Wharf, as well as the Boardwalk. This year's focus is "Show Your Light," whereby, along with the many powerful lights that will turn on at 9pm, we are asking 20,000 members of our community to bring and shine their own light.
"Night-Light" is an annual event based out of Santa Cruz, CA that uses light as a means to bring community together over the very important issue of peace. This is a non-political event, whereby there are no speeches or protests. "Night-Light" is a quiet vigil to keep the discussion of peace alive. Historically, from campfires, candle light vigils, to celebrations under the full moon, light has been a powerful tool for communal meeting. "Night-Light" is a community art installation that illuminates the voice of our community.
All contributions to the annual Night-Light project can be made payable to the SCICA c/o Night-Light, 1040 River Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
